Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France (Sports Network) - John Isner boosted the United States into the Davis Cup semifinals with a four-set victory over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday.

Isner battled through the 3-hour, 21-minute encounter for the 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3 triumph that gave the Americans an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five tie.

It was the second straight stunning road victory for the Americans. In February, they pulled off a 5-0 whitewash of a Roger Federer-led Swiss contingent in Fribourg, also on clay.

The U.S. will head to Spain for the Davis Cup semifinals, September 14-16. The reigning champions finished off a victory over Austria Sunday when David Ferrer beat Jurgen Melzer in straight sets in the fourth rubber of that matchup.

This was the first time in 22 years the U.S. won consecutive ties on the road on clay. The Americans last won the title in 2007.
