Michelle Obama World Record Holder for Jumping Jacks
DES MOINES, Iowa -- First lady Michelle Obama kicked off her three-day tour to celebrate the anniversary of her anti-obesity Let's Move! campaign with a boisterous pep rally on Thursday in a Des Moines arena with 14,000 kids, sports celebrities, dancing and a giant birthday cake made of oranges, bananas and other kinds of fruit.
Wearing black pants and a color-block sweater with red-and-cream stripes across the yoke, adorned with a big black heart, Obama appeared on the stage of the Wells Fargo Arena to thunderous applause from the kids, according to the White House press pool report.
"This is so cool!" she said. "Happy Birthday, Let's Move!" She praised Iowa for being at the vanguard of the movement to eat healthier.
"I'm proud that you guys are eating your fruits and vegetables," she said, "I'm proud that you guys are walking to school instead of taking the bus."
Then she led the kids and the celebs onstage, including figure skater Michelle Kwan, Gov. Terry Branstad (R) of Iowa, and Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack, a former Iowa governor, in the "Interlude Dance."
"The kids and FLOTUS were very into it; Govs. Vilsack and Branstad, slightly less so," the pooler blandly reported.
Obama is on a four-state swing to mark the second anniversary of her signature initiative to reduce childhood obesity by encouraging healthier eating and exercise. She planned to tape an interview with Access Hollywood, then travel to Little Rock, Ark., for an event to promote healthy diets in the military, and on to Fort Worth for a roundtable discussion with parents about healthy eating.
She also planned to be at similar events in Dallas and multiple cities in Florida over the next two days.
