MIAMI -- A Florida group that advocates for tougher laws against those in the country illegally is "thanking" Gov. Rick Scott for welcoming illegal immigrants to the state with billboard message on Interstate 75.
The billboard's sarcastic message reads: "Welcome Illegal Immigrants: We offer jobs, health care, education and benefits," and suggests the immigrants thank the governor. The governor's office declined to comment Wednesday.
Floridians for Immigration Enforcement is behind the sign between the Georgia border and Interstate 10. The group is angry that bills requiring companies in Florida to use an online program to identify whether a potential new hire is eligible to work have stalled.
The federal E-verify program is voluntary, yet a small but growing number of states require employers use it. Critics say the error rate is too high.
