JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Despite insistence by the government that its check distribution is timely, some First Coast parents continue to complain that a new computer system used by the Florida Department of Revenue is not delivering child support checks.

"The children need food, they need a roof over their heads. The rent is late. There is nothing coming in," said Sally, a mother who did not want to be identified.

The department late last year began transitioning to make child support services more efficient. Some parents said they are being told the system is the reason for delays in checks being disbursed.

Sally's support check was two months late even though the funds are in her state account, she said.

But when she appealed to case workers for help, she was told, "'The system is down and we cannot get your funds to you'."

A department spokesperson said today that there are no issues at the office.

There are no "known systemic system-related problems impacting payment processing," said Renee Watters.

She added it may take staff more time to review cases with the new system, but they are "building proficiency each day."

The department is encouraging parents with specific problems to contact their local child support office or call 800-622-5437.

The local Department of Revenue handles nearly 70,000 child support cases.
