AUBURN, Ga. -- Authorities say a man who tried to take his own life during a standoff with police this week after being accused in the death of his girlfriend and shooting a neighbor has died.
Police told WAGA-TV that 29-year-old Shuaid Zaid Omar passed away Tuesday morning at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Investigators say Omar killed his girlfriend Betty Marie Maddox at her apartment on Monday and shot a neighbor who lived downstairs. Officers say Omar drove to a relative's house in Suwanee where he threatened to kill himself during a standoff with police then shot himself.
The neighbor is still being treated at Gwinnett Medical Center.
