ATLANTA -- A state commission that certifies Georgia educators has yanked the licenses of five educators who were accused of cheating in Atlanta Public Schools.

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission revoked the license of one test coordinator and suspended the licenses of four teachers. The suspensions will last two years.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the commission decided the five educators violated ethical guidelines. Their names were not released.

A state investigation in July revealed widespread cheating by educators in nearly half of the Atlanta's 100 schools dating back to 2001. In all, nearly 180 teachers and principals were accused of giving answers to students or changing answers once the tests had been completed.

The testing problems first came to light after the newspaper reported that some scores were statistically improbable.
