JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- First Coast News' Student of the Week is a third grader at Brentwood Elementary School of the Arts who is motivated to do her best whether it's academics or the arts.
Nine-year old Valeria Ortiz worked so hard in class that her teacher, Jamie Summersgill, nominated her for Student of the Week.
"She excels in the classroom as well as the arts. She's reading above grade level and she's always willing to help the rest of the people in the classroom as well," said Summersgill.
She added Valeria represents what Brentwood is all about as a performing arts school.
"I like to do drama, dance, and art. I like drama because I like to act. That's my favorite thing," said Valeria.
She also loves to draw and paint and is in a dance group at school and she plays soccer. One of her pieces of artwork is displayed in the school's art gallery.
"I love this school. It's so much fun with all the stuff we do," said Valeria.
Brentwood Elementary School of the Arts is one of the oldest schools in Duval County. It was built in 1915. It has been a Magnate School of the Arts for nearly a decade.
