JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Students at University Christian will begin using iPads instead of textbooks in the fall.

Students in grades eight through 12 will each carry an independently owned Apple iPad2 as part of a new partnership with Apple through the Apple Learning Initiative.

According to a statement from University Christian, it is the first school in Northeast Florida and the third in the state to implement the program.

"The iPad can act independently or can be fully compatible with most home computers. This will change the learning environment of University Christian for the better very quickly," said Heath Nivens, head of school for University Christian.

"For parents, the upfront cost will be mitigated over the years through savings they would have otherwise spent on textbooks."

New technology planned for the school includes wireless classrooms, a media room with amphitheater seating and the staff addition of an IT director.

University Christian School, on University Boulevard South, is a private Christian school that serves grades K through 12.
